From 8 to 19 July 2019, Dr. Christoph Mesbach of Dresden University of Technology was invited to give a lecture series on "Democracy in the Digital Age" at the 2019 International Summer School. The lecture was hosted by Dr. Jishi Lee, Associate Dean of school of Government and Management. The international summer program highlights“internationality, humanity, steering and participation’’ characteristics, pays attention to the lessons at the all England teaching combined with the international cases, plays an important role in enhance students' comprehensive professional knowledge and the ability of the cross-cultural communication, is benefit in help build strong international learning atmosphere, to expand the breadth and depth of professional learning.
Dr. Mesbach analyzes the impact of the rise of social media and Internet platforms influence on the mainstream media and the challenges poses to western democracy and rakes comprehensive and in-depth analysis of the normative value and existing debates under the concept of Western democracy. In allusion to the current phenomenon of rising populism in The United States and Europe, Dr. Mesbach focuses on the analysis of its erosion of the democratic idea and its huge pressure on the existing crisis resolution mechanism and Social consensus. Its novel lecture theme, international delivery method and active interactive form benefit the teachers and students who attended the course.
Dr. Christoph Mesbach received his Doctorate in Philosophy from Dresden University of Technology in 2015, and his doctoral dissertation was awarded the Vienna Rupert Prize. His main research topics are the impact of human nature on social cohesion and political order, as well as the interaction between democracy and the Internet and sociological research methodology.
